The ISM's manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 54.4 from 56.3 in August.
Readings above 50 indicate expanding activity, and September was the 14th consecutive month of growth, said the ISM. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had expected a September reading of 54.0. "While the headline number shows relative strength this month as the PMI reading of 54.4 is still quite positive, the overall picture is less encouraging," said Norbert Ore, who directs the survey for the ISM. That's because the components of the PMI weakened. The ISM's new orders index fell to 51.1 from 53.1 in August, while the production index dropped to 56.5 from 59.9. Factory employment grew, but at a slower pace. The index stood at 56.5 from 60.4 in the prior month. The inventory index increased to 55.6 from 51.4. The exports index was little changed at 54.5 from 55.5 in August. Price pressures were much higher. The prices index in September jumped to 70.5 from 61.5 in August. Factory surveys done by regional Federal Reserve banks were mixed for September. The national ISM report supports the view that the U.S. factory sector's vigor is waning from earlier in the recovery.(WSJ)
